These consisted of a dark grey button-through gown with long sleeves and a red skull cap and belt. The church in winter was so cold we wore the robes over our coats and ended up looking like hessian sacks!  Our first choir mistress and organist at Brook was Erica Newbery and sometimes we would sing for services in Mottistone Church. When Erica married and left Brook, Mrs Stone, Janet’s mother, took over. I regret to say we didn’t always behave ourselves as we should and Mrs Stone would glare at us in the mirror above the organ. Sometimes we would get the giggles, sometimes we would invent actions to the words of the hymns and occasionally we would not stop whispering. I cannot recall Reverend Bowyer ever telling us off, but I think Janet used to be told off for her behaviour.
